Shower filters are an easy product to sell badly. The category is full of vague language: "spa water," "purified," "revitalising." None of those words mean anything measurable, and most shoppers end up choosing on price or packaging because there is nothing else to compare.
I have spent four years building shower filters and testing competitor units against European water. The good news is that the decision is not complicated once you know what to look at. There are five things that actually matter, and four of them are easy to check before you buy.
This guide walks through each one, with a comparison framework at the end you can use on any filter, including ours.
What the filter actually removes
Start here, because most product pages skip it. A shower filter cannot remove everything, and any brand that implies otherwise is not being straight with you.
The variables that genuinely affect skin and hair are chlorine, sediment and, in some regions, the by-products of municipal disinfection. A filter should tell you which of these it targets and to what degree. "Removes impurities" is not an answer. "Reduces free chlorine to non-detectable levels in independent lab testing" is.
One thing no shower filter does is soften water. Hardness comes from dissolved calcium and magnesium, and removing those at shower-flow rates is not physically practical in a compact cartridge. If a shower filter claims to soften your water, treat every other claim on the page with suspicion.
The filter media: vitamin C, carbon or KDF
The media is the part that does the work, and there are three common types.
Activated carbon is the cheapest and most widely used. It adsorbs chlorine reasonably well at low flow, but it saturates quickly and its performance drops sharply once it does. Carbon-only shower filters often stop working weeks before the user replaces them, with no visible warning.
KDF (a copper-zinc medium) handles chlorine and some metals and lasts longer than carbon, but it performs best in cooler water and adds weight and cost.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) neutralises free chlorine through a fast chemical reaction rather than slow adsorption. It works at hot shower temperatures, where carbon struggles, and it does not saturate the same way. This is why vitamin C cartridges are standard equipment in Korean households. Many strong filters combine a sediment-and-mineral pre-stage with a vitamin C stage, which is the setup we use.
There is no single correct media, but you should know which one you are buying and why.
Cartridge lifespan and the real running cost
The sticker price of a shower filter is close to meaningless. The number that matters is cost per month, and that depends on cartridge life.
Cartridge life is not a quality score on its own, it follows the chemistry of the media. A reactive medium like vitamin C is consumed as it neutralises chlorine, so it is replaced often by design, typically every two to four weeks; that is the cartridge doing its job, not failing early. A carbon cartridge runs longer largely because it fades silently as it saturates, often with no signal that it has stopped working. So a 2-to-4-week vitamin C cartridge and a 3-to-6-month carbon cartridge are not better or worse than each other, they are different media on different schedules. Hard-water regions shorten any cartridge life, so a London or Berlin household will replace cartridges more often than someone in a soft-water area.
What matters is that the brand publishes its cartridge life honestly, so you can find the replacement price, the stated lifespan, and work out the real annual cost before you buy. If a brand does not publish cartridge life, that is a meaningful red flag. It usually means the answer is not flattering.
Flow rate and pressure compatibility
A filter that halves your water pressure will not stay on your shower for long. This is the most common reason people abandon shower filters.
European plumbing often runs at lower pressure than the systems many filters are designed for, and adding a dense filtration cartridge increases resistance. A well-designed filter accounts for this with internal nozzle geometry that recovers the pressure loss, so the shower still feels like a shower.
You cannot fully test this before buying, so look for two things: an explicit statement that the unit is designed for low-pressure systems, and a return policy long enough to test it in your own bathroom.
Third-party testing you can actually check
The last criterion separates serious brands from the rest. Anyone can write "clinically tested" on a box. The question is whether they will tell you who did the testing.
Look for named laboratories and named standards. Our filter, for example, is tested at three independent Korean institutes: KEWI for chlorine output, KTR for pH neutralisation, and the P&K Skin Clinical Research Centre for dermatological compatibility. The filter is manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 management-system standards.
You do not need to memorise those codes. You need to confirm that the brand names its testing at all. A brand that tested its product will tell you where. A brand that did not will use words like "lab-approved" and leave it there.
Shower filter or whole-house softener?
A question worth settling before you spend anything: do you need a shower filter or a whole-house water softener? They solve overlapping but different problems.
A whole-house softener replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium across your entire plumbing system. It genuinely softens water, but it requires professional installation, typically costs €2,000 or more, adds sodium to your drinking water, and is not an option in most rented apartments.
A shower filter treats only the water reaching your skin. It does not soften water, but it removes the chlorine, sediment and metal traces that a softener largely ignores, installs in two minutes with no tools, and costs a fraction of the price.
If your concern is limescale on taps and appliances, that is a softener job. If your concern is skin and hair, a shower filter targets the variables that actually affect them.
