Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.
The scalp is an extension of the skin and relies on a healthy skin barrier to maintain comfort and overall scalp health. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, some individuals may experience dryness, irritation and discomfort - and water quality is one environmental variable that is frequently underestimated.
One of the most significant factors affecting water quality is water hardness. Hard water contains naturally occurring minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium, which enter the water supply as rainwater passes through layers of chalk and limestone. If you live in Southern England, you are likely exposed to some of the hardest water in the UK.
Research suggests that hard water may influence skin barrier function.
A large UK Biobank cohort study found an association between domestic hard water exposure and a higher prevalence of eczema in adults - with participants living in areas with CaCO₃ concentrations above 200 mg/L showing modestly increased odds of eczema compared to those in softer-water areas (Lopez et al., British Journal of Dermatology, 2022).
While hard water is not considered a direct cause of eczema or other inflammatory skin conditions, the evidence suggests it may contribute to dryness and irritation in susceptible individuals. Because the scalp is an extension of the skin, this matters for hair and scalp health too.

Chlorine levels in tap water are considered safe for consumption, but for individuals with sensitive skin or a compromised skin barrier, daily chlorine exposure through showering is worth considering separately from drinking water safety. The contact is different - more frequent, longer duration, and often in repeated exposure during regular hot showers.
For people who already experience dryness, irritation or scalp sensitivity, reducing that daily chlorine exposure may be a practical step alongside their existing care routine.
Mineral deposits from hard water can accumulate on the hair fibre over time. As a trichologist, I see this reflected in how clients describe their hair - it feels different, products stop performing the way they used to, and no amount of conditioning seems to fully resolve the issue.

Mineral deposits can also interfere with the performance of haircare and skincare products by creating a barrier between the product and the hair or skin surface. Clients investing in scalp serums, bond-building treatments or colour services may find the results less predictable in hard-water areas - not because the products aren't working, but because the water is working against them.
From a trichology perspective, addressing water quality is most effective as part of a layered approach.
Address the water at source. A shower filter that reduces chlorine and filters sediment lowers the daily load on the scalp - removing two variables that compound over time. This is not a treatment for any scalp condition, but it changes the baseline your scalp is working from every day.
Consider your product routine holistically. If your haircare results feel inconsistent despite using quality products, water hardness is worth investigating. Check your local water supplier's annual quality report for a hardness figure in mg/L CaCO₃. In hard-water areas, what you apply matters - but so does what you apply it with.
No shower filter should be viewed as a treatment for scalp conditions - and that point is worth being clear about. But water quality is a real environmental variable, and one that trichology and dermatology research has increasingly recognised as relevant to scalp and skin health.
We spend a great deal of time thinking about the products we apply to our hair and skin, yet rarely question the water they are applied with. For many people, that may be the overlooked variable.

Hard water is not a direct cause of scalp conditions such as eczema or seborrheic dermatitis, but research suggests it may contribute to dryness and irritation in susceptible individuals. Mineral deposits left on the scalp surface may contribute to skin-barrier disruption over time, particularly in people with pre-existing sensitivity. If you have a diagnosed scalp condition, consult a trichologist or dermatologist - water quality may be one factor to consider alongside medical treatment.
The most consistent signal is a change that correlates with location. If your hair felt and behaved differently after moving to a new city - and your products and routine stayed the same - water hardness is worth investigating. Hair that feels coated, dull or harder to manage despite regular conditioning is another indicator. You can check your water hardness at your local supplier's website; anything above 200 mg/L CaCO₃ is considered hard.
Chlorine at UK tap concentrations is safe. The question for skin and scalp health is not acute harm but daily cumulative exposure - particularly in hot showers, where chlorine absorption through the skin is higher. For most people this is not a significant concern. For those with sensitive skin, a compromised barrier or existing dryness, reducing that daily chlorine contact may be one practical step in their overall care routine.
