Vitamin C Shower Filter

What it is, how the chemistry works, and who actually notices the difference.

What is a vitamin C shower filter?

A vitamin C shower filter uses ascorbic acid - the same vitamin found in citrus - to reduce the chlorine in your shower water through a chemical reaction, converting it to harmless chloride. Most filters pair it with a sediment stage that catches rust and grit first. It works fast, which suits the hot, fast-moving water of a real shower. It does not soften your water, and how much difference you notice depends mostly on how hard and how chlorinated your water is.

What a Vitamin C Shower Filter Is

A vitamin C shower filter is a cartridge that treats the water as it passes through your shower, rather than adding anything to it. Inside, food-grade ascorbic acid reacts with free chlorine and converts it to chloride; a separate sediment stage removes rust and particulates before the water reaches you. PICKI NIKI's media contains no activated carbon and no metal alloys, and is designed for stable performance under hot, fast-flowing shower water.

How the chemistry works in detail: read the full breakdown (vitamin C vs. activated carbon).

Why the Vitamin C Approach Suits a Shower

A shower is a specific environment: hot water, fast flow, short contact time, used every day. Because vitamin C works by reacting rather than by trapping, the reaction happens in under a second of contact - short enough to keep up with shower-flow water. And unlike processes that slow down as water heats up, this reaction is mechanistically faster at warmer temperatures, so hot shower water works in its favour, not against it.

Is a Vitamin C Shower Filter Right for You?

We'd rather set honest expectations than oversell. The single biggest factor is how hard your water is - the harder it is, the more mineral film there is to reduce, and many of our UK customers live in hard-water areas like London. Chlorine is the other signal: if you can smell it in your shower, you're a good candidate, and that goes double if your skin tends to feel tight or dry afterwards.

And honestly - if you're in a soft-water area with little chlorine, the difference will be smaller. A vitamin C filter solves a water problem; if your water isn't the problem, it won't manufacture one.

The PICKI NIKI Vitamin C Filter

Our filtered shower head runs a two-stage system: a sediment pre-filter for grit and rust, then the vitamin C gel cartridge that reduces chlorine. In independent testing, free chlorine dropped from 0.19 mg/L to non-detectable (KEWI, 2020), with pH-balanced output (pH 10.0 to 7.38, KTR 2023) and output tested non-detectable for heavy metals and pesticides under a 60-parameter drinking-water test (KEWI, 2020). The finished filter tested non-irritant in a human skin study.

  • The gel is visible. A transparent housing lets you see the vitamin C being used up, so you replace it when it's genuinely spent, not when a calendar says so.
  • Lifespan. The vitamin C gel cartridge lasts 2-4 weeks for a two-person household showering daily; the sediment stage lasts 1-3 months.
  • Trusted by 1,000+ reviewers across Okendo and Trustpilot combined.
  • Price. Filtered shower head £89 / €99; replacement vitamin C gel filter £15 / €15.
